ConservaCube package wins four FPA achievement awards

ConservaCube package wins four FPA achievement awards

The cutting-edge, environmentally friendly ConservaCube™, a unique trademark-design cube-shaped package that holds up to 55 lbs., has received four 2018 Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards from the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) during the organization's Annual Meeting in Naples, FL on March, 13th. The awards include:

  • Gold Award – Expanding the Use of Flexible Packaging
  • Gold Award – Sustainability
  • Silver Award – Technical Innovation
  • Silver Award – Packaging Excellence

The awards recognize significant innovation and advances that have changed packaging. ConservaCube is made with a co-extruded packaging film that contains several high-performance resins produced by NOVA Chemicals Corporation ("NOVA Chemicals"). NOVA Chemicals nominated ConservaCube for the FPA awards.

"ConservaCube is a unique product in the heavy duty sack space," explained Mark Kay, performance films group leader for NOVA Chemicals' polyethylene business. "We are thrilled to see this package recognized for so many outstanding features, including its recyclability. Sustainability is critical to today's consumers, and ConservaCube has been able to leverage NOVA Chemicals' resins in a recyclable film structure with outstanding physical performance."

The multi-layer film features an all-polyethylene (PE) recyclable structure that delivers performance properties such as strength, stiffness, optics and sealability required in today's heavy duty packaging. A number of NOVA Chemicals' resins were incorporated in the film's design, including SPsK919, a new high-performance polyethylene launched in 2017 that offers exceptional creep resistance, stiffness-toughness balance and sealability.

To develop a co-extrusion film formulation, NOVA Chemicals and ConservaCube conducted a series of trials with different resin and layer combinations to find a solution that achieved performance comparable to that of a laminate. The new structure is produced on a three-layer co-extrusion blown film line and printed on a flexographic press, and is being used in several commercial ConservaCube applications, including a 10-lb., 3-mil-thick bag for three different Laticrete® Skimcoat products.

"Testing multiple resin and layer combinations was critical to obtaining the performance results we were looking for," said Mark Martinez, ConservaCube president. "NOVA Chemicals understood our need for manufacturing efficiency, cost control and minimizing impact on the environment, and was instrumental in helping ConservaCube deliver a great new product."

NOVA Chemicals began working with ConservaCube in 2016, after Field Packaging Solutions, the parent company of Primary Packaging, acquired ownership interest in ConservaCube. Primary Packaging has been a customer of NOVA Chemicals for more than 25 years.
