30 Extrusion International 5/2023 30 INDUSTRY NEWS Plants in Texas and Belgium Certified for Mass Balance Production Solvay has announced that its polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) produc - tion at Borger, Texas, and its Ryton ® PPS Echo compounding at Kallo- Beveren, Belgium, have obtained independent mass balance (MB 1 ) certification under the widely rec - ognized International Sustainability and Carbon Certification PLUS (ISCC PLUS 2 ) scheme of accreditation. These products offer the same technical qualities as comparable virgin PPS resins, which eliminates the need for re-validation and makes these bio-circular PPS prod- ucts particularly attractive to manu- facturers seeking a smooth and reli- able transition to more sustainable and eco-responsible materials. “Our mass balanced PPS grades meet with customers’ increasing ef- forts to reduce their scope 3 emis- sions 3 and carbon footprint without compromising processability or end- use performance,” comments Ysée Génot, E-Mobility and Sustainability Marketing Manager. Ryton ® PPS compounds are widely used in automotive, electrical/elec - tronics and appliances, where they meet especially high thermal and mechanical performance require- ments. They have a long history of replacing metals and thermosets, reducing fuel consumption and costs while improving system integration. Ryton ® is a registered trademark of Solvay. 1 Made with renewable and/or recycled materials by using the Mass Balance (MB) accounting approach. The MB concept according to the ISCC PLUS principles has become a globally acknowledged industry standard that provides a defined set of rules for tracking and tracing the sustainability share of circular and renewable feedstock in materials and end products. As a result, users of certified materials can claim a reduced carbon footprint for their formulations based on Solvay’s life cycle assessment calculation, and brand owners can document the enhanced sustainability toward consumers. 2 ISCC PLUS provides voluntary certification of circular and bio-based products, renewables, food, feed and bio-fuels for non-regulated markets outside the framework of the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) of the European Commission. It covers raw materials and feedstock from sources such as agriculture and forestry, bio-waste, residues, renewable and recycled materials that can make a contribu - tion to circular and bio-economy. 3 Within the framework of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP), Scope 1 refers to direct emissions from in-house production pro - cesses, Scope 2 to indirect emissions from purchased energy, and Scope 3 to all other indirect emissions from upstream and downstream sources, such as material supplies, packaging and transportation. Solvay www.solvay.com New Austrian Production – Facility Is Fully Operational Extreme Coatings, a leading global supplier of wear- resistant coating solutions for the plastics and rubber in- dustries, has announced that its new manufacturing fa - cility in Austria for the production of high-performance coatings for feedscrews in injection molding and extru- sion applications is fully operational. The company has established a European subsidiary, Extreme Coatings GmbH, and formed a strategic part - nership with a leading Austrian engineering services company to operate the facility. The new plant is al- ready meeting the application needs of a range of Euro- pean customers including plastic part manufacturers for the automotive, packaging, and profile markets. The increased capacity in Europe will shorten lead times, reduce shipping costs, and establish local supply for Extreme Coatings’ growing customer base through- out Europe, according to Scott Caplan, Executive Vice President, Extreme Coatings. The 15,000-sq-ft Austria plant expands Extreme Coatings’ global footprint which includes operations in India, South Korea, and Chile. “We’ve expanded our global footprint so we can break the logistical logjam that exists today and ensure stable supply to all key European regions,” said Caplan. Extreme Coatings has established a licensing agree- ment with Austria’s FS Maschinenbau, a family-owned engineering services business, to provide engineering andmanufacturingservices.ExtremeCoatingshastrans- ferred technology and know-how to FS Maschinenbau and new equipment has been installed at the new plant. FS Maschinenbau is a leading developer and man- ufacturer of machine tools and equipment for the manufacturing of rotors, stators, and screws. The company has been a leader in being a solutions pro- vider for the oil and gas service companies, providing state-of-the-art machine tools, automation and turn - key solutions for complete manufacturing plants for rotors and stators. Europe continues to be a growing area for plastics manufacturing with feedscrew coatings playing a pivot- al role in optimizing the performance of injection mold- ing and extrusion machinery for production of automo- tive, household goods, and building products.
