Extrusion International 1-2022

29 Extrusion International 1/2022 Guill Tool & Engineering Co. Inc. 10 Pike Street, West Warwick, RI 02893, USA www.guill.com Series addresses a speci fi c manufac- turing process required by a wide range of industries throughout the world. With the fl exible product design, any extruder con fi guration may be quickly and easily adapted. Over the years, Guill has partnered with leaders in extruder technology, resulting in a worldwide reputation for quality and reliability. In addition, easy and fast cleaning are important bene fi ts of Guill ex- trusion tools with speci fi c instruction manuals provided with each extru- sion head. Design Utilizing the latest 3D CAD/MCAD connected with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and CDF (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Systems, Guill en- gineers were fi rst to develop the FlexiSpiral™ de fl ector, the patented FeatherTouch™die adjusting system for 100% concentricity control and the SealRight™ feature. The com- pany has also developed a Quick- Change Manifold for rapid change of color and/or material, saving ex- truders considerable time and mon- ey during changeover procedures. Manufacturing With a full complement of EDM and 5-axis machining centers, Guill is un- matched in the manufacture of ex- trusion tooling. Combined with the in-house rheology lab, where mate- rials are tested for performance and extrudability and extrusion processes are tested and run in full simulation, the Guill tools and equipment we of- fer are fully documented to deliver the results needed. As further evi- dence of the quality manufacturing, Guill is known as a top supplier of medical and aerospace components through our sister divisions at the company. Industries Served Among the dozens of extrusion end markets Guill serves around the world: Blow Molding; Chemi- cal Hose & Tubing; Compounding; Construction; Consumer Products; Corrugated Hose & Pipe; Cosmetics; Electronics; Energy; Fiber Optic; Food Processing; Industrial Hose & Tube; Industrial Pipe; Irrigation Tubing; Medical; Pelletizing; Pharmaceutical; Pro fi les; Rubber & Silicones; TPE and Specialty Compounds; Special Pack- aging; Under Sea Cable & Pipe; Utili- ties; Universities; R&D; Wire & Cable; Wood & Composites. Useful Tools A little known fact about the Guill website, the company offers various calculators to help extruders. These tools are very useful in determining: • DDR to Tooling • Tooling to DDR • Extrusion Rate Calculator • Annual Cost of Lengthy Concentric- ity Adjustments • Crosshead Replacement Analysis Latest Achievements Guill has released its new reciprocat- ing head. The traditional tip and die assembly is replaced with a linear reciprocating assembly that chang- es the tube’s pro fi le within a given length. This process is repeated throughout a single extrusion run without interruptions. Cutting capa- bility, in association with the extru- sion speed, cuts the fi nished product to length. While cost and value stream activi- ties are reduced, quality is improved. Only one extrusion run is needed to produce a fi nished product, as op- posed to multiple extrusion runs with tooling changes along with a manual assembly operation to con- nect different tubing shapes. Guill’s new reciprocating head eliminates an assembly operation. It also elimi- nates in-process inventory. Thus, there is no need for storage of vari- ous tubing shapes and connectors needed for assembly, ful fi llment of orders and replenishment of fi nished goods. Furthermore, the reciprocating head eliminates a connecting piece, allows JIT production and products made- to-order. Lastly, it reduces total run time from receiving the order to shipping. Furthermore Guill announces the immediate availability of its new die cart with easy disassembly and reas- sembly. It features a high volume, ad- justable center accumulating cross- head. This crosshead is designed to produce a smooth linear bore and provide jacketing over various sub- strates. The crosshead’s maximum thru core is 18,” while its maximum die ID is 23”. Built to handle thermo- plastic applications, the crosshead includes tooling and isolation sleeve design. Additionally, the tooling section features quadrant heating. Guill’s crosshead stand is equipped with an integral alignment station and concentric role guide. The stand is also an integral cleaning station, so clients don’t need to remove the crosshead for cleaning. Lastly, this crosshead has “on-the fl y” catenary adjustment and can be easily main- tained with simple hand tools.
